What to do in the first days after a crash
You have more time than an insurance adjuster will suggest, and less than you would like. This is the order that matters. For more on each step, read the first 72 hours after a car accident.
Get examined early
Pain usually ramps up over the first few days as the adrenaline fades. An early exam documents what is injured while the picture is still clear, and gets you moving before the stiffness settles in. You do not need a referral, and you do not need to wait for the insurance paperwork to catch up.
Open a PIP claim with your own insurer
Personal Injury Protection is no-fault coverage, which means you open it with your own insurance company even when the other driver caused the crash. It is a separate claim from the one covering damage to your car. How PIP works, in plain language →
Do not rush a settlement
Some crash injuries take weeks to fully declare themselves. Settling before you know what you are dealing with is difficult to undo, and an early offer is not a measure of what the injury will cost you.
Keep moving, gently
Bed rest and a stiff collar are no longer the advice. Find the point in each direction where the pain starts, back off slightly, and move within that range several times a day. Short, frequent walks help most kinds of back pain too.

Why crash injuries behave differently
A collision loads your neck faster than the muscles that protect it can respond. The spine is forced briefly into an unnatural S-shape before it snaps back, and the discs, joint capsules, ligaments and muscles holding it together absorb that load. The cluster of symptoms that follows is what most people call whiplash.
Two things make it awkward. The damage is mostly soft tissue, so it rarely shows up on the imaging done in an emergency room. And the pain often peaks days later — after you have already told everyone you were fine.
That is the case for being examined properly rather than waiting to see how it goes.
When to go to urgent care or the ER first
Go to urgent care or an emergency room, not a chiropractor, if after a crash you have:
- Numbness, tingling or weakness in your arms or legs
- A headache that is severe or getting worse
- Dizziness, confusion, vomiting or blurred vision
- Trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control
- Severe neck pain after a high-speed or rollover crash
Once those are ruled out, the soft-tissue and joint injuries most crashes leave behind are exactly what chiropractic care treats.
Your auto insurance most likely covers this
Washington drivers carry Personal Injury Protection unless they have declined it in writing. It pays for treatment after a crash regardless of who caused it, and it is separate from the claim repairing your car. We bill it directly, so there is nothing for you to submit.
Examined, explained and treated the same day, in most cases

Your first visit is an examination and, in most cases, treatment on the same day. Dr. Penner tests how the neck and spine are moving, finds which structures are irritated, and explains what he finds before treating anything.
Treatment is hands-on and usually combines chiropractic adjustment to restore movement in stiff or irritated joints with soft-tissue work for the muscles that have tightened around the injury. After a recent collision, gentler instrument-assisted adjusting is often the better place to start, and that is a conversation, not a surprise.
You leave with simple movements to do at home and an honest answer about whether you need to come back. You pay for the visit you had — no contract, no prepaid package, and no pressure to keep scheduling once you are doing well.
How this ends — including when the insurer is paying
PIP pays per visit. That is exactly why this needs saying out loud: your treatment here ends when you have recovered, not when the PIP limit is reached. Washington PIP covers care received within three years of the crash. That is a ceiling, not a target.
So the promise holds whoever is paying, including when an insurer is footing the bill and there would be no cost to you in carrying on. When you are done, Dr. Penner says so. Most people are done in a handful of visits.

I’ve seen Dr. Penner off and on for years now and have always been given good information and received the appropriate treatment that involved only a necessary amount of visits–no pressure to come for weeks and weeks if things were improving; which they always did. Dr. Penner has a calm and friendly manner and is a great communicator.

Dr. Penner is great! He is not one of “those” chiropractors who tell you that you need to come in for “x” amount of sessions in order to solve your problem, which to me always feels like a scam. He does adjustments and let’s you decide if you need to come back. I’ve been seeing him for years, but can go months without needing an adjustment after even just one visit sometimes. Highly recommend!

Dr. Penner is an excellent chiropractor. I visited him a few months ago for a lingering pain in my neck. Not only did the pain essentially go away, but he also gave me some tips about posture while working and some neck stretches that would help. Without the help of Dr. Penner, I would still be feeling that little pain in my neck today!
Benjamin Malchert · Woodinville
Highly recommend Dr. Penner. In addition to being knowledgeable, he is intentional in asking questions to understand what’s going on and how he can help. Also appreciated him recommending stretches to help improve mobility at home.

Questions to ask any chiropractor after a crash
These are worth asking before you book anywhere, including here. Below are the Woodinville clinic’s answers. For everything else the clinic treats, see Woodinville chiropractic services.
Is it worth seeing a chiropractor after a car accident?
Often, yes, for the neck and back pain that follows a crash. Most of it is soft-tissue and joint irritation that responds to hands-on treatment and early movement. It is not the right first stop for every injury: numbness, weakness, a worsening headache or dizziness after a crash mean urgent care or an emergency room first.
Do you bill PIP directly?
Yes. SoundCare Chiropractic in Woodinville bills your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurer directly, so there is nothing for you to submit. Call before your first visit and we will check what your policy covers.
Does Washington car insurance cover chiropractic care?
Usually, through PIP. Washington insurers must offer PIP with at least $10,000 in medical benefits (RCW 48.22.095), and it stays on your policy unless you declined it in writing. It pays regardless of who caused the crash, for care received within three years of the accident.
Is there a treatment plan or package I have to agree to?
No. There is no contract and no prepaid package. Dr. Penner tells you how many visits he expects after the exam, not before it, and you pay for each visit you have, whether you or your insurer is paying.
What would make you stop treating me?
Getting better. Care here ends when you have recovered, not when your PIP limit runs out, and Dr. Penner tells you when you are done. If your pain is not behaving like a mechanical problem, he will tell you that too.
Do I need a lawyer or a referral to be treated?
No to both. You open a PIP claim yourself with your own insurer, and you can book with Dr. Penner directly online or by phone. Whether to hire a lawyer for the rest of your claim is your decision, and it does not change how you are treated here.
How soon after a crash should I be seen?
Within the first few days is best, even if you feel fine. Crash pain often peaks a day or two later, and an early exam records what was injured while the picture is clear. The Woodinville clinic sees patients on Mondays and Fridays, so book the next available day.
