Tim Miller · Woodinville

Dr Penner is awesome highly recommend. He is an athlete and so understands athlete problems. I have visited him over many years at different locations when I find ways to injure myself in training and have always had great results. He’s great at teaching exercises that help the healing process and getting back to movement and play.

I’ve seen Dr. Penner off and on for years now and have always been given good information and received the appropriate treatment that involved only a necessary amount of visits–no pressure to come for weeks and weeks if things were improving; which they always did. Dr. Penner has a calm and friendly manner and is a great communicator.

Dr. Penner is fantastic, I have gone to him for many years, first after having kids with some pregnancy related back issues and later for sports related issues. He has always been able to carefully manage my pain and get me back to being active. Super grateful for him!

Why overuse injuries keep coming back

Overuse injuries rarely come from the spot that hurts. A knee that aches on descents is often a hip that is not doing its share. A shoulder that pinches overhead is often a stiff upper back. Rest the painful part and it settles — then returns within a week of going back to what you were doing, because nothing about the pattern changed.

That is the loop worth breaking. It usually means finding the joint that has stopped contributing, restoring it, and then loading the tissue that has been picking up the slack.

Where overuse injuries usually show up

Hands-on treatment, plus the exercises that help keep it from coming back

Every visit starts with a conversation, not a treatment plan.

An examination that looks at how you move, not only where it hurts. Hands-on treatment for the joints and the soft tissue around them. Extremity work where the problem is a shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, elbow or wrist rather than the spine. And specific loading exercises, the part that does the most to keep it from coming back.

You will also get a straight answer about training. Usually it is a modification rather than a stop, and if it does need to be a stop for a while, you will be told why and roughly for how long.

If what you have is a structural injury that chiropractic care should not be treating, you will hear that too, rather than a course of visits.

When to go to urgent care or the ER first

Some sports injuries need urgent care or an emergency room before anything else. Go there first if the injury came with:

  • Sudden, severe pain
  • Heavy swelling or bruising
  • A leg, knee, ankle or foot you cannot put weight on
  • A joint you cannot move normally, or real weakness in the limb
  • A bone or joint that looks out of place

Those are signs of an acute injury that may need imaging or a brace. Once they are ruled out, the slow-building, keeps-coming-back kind of injury is what this clinic treats.

You are done when you are training again

The endpoint here is not an empty pain scale on a treatment table. It is the run, the season, the ceiling you were painting. Care ends when you are back doing the thing without it flaring afterward, and the loading exercises are what help hold that once you stop coming in.

Most people are done in a handful of visits. You pay for the visit you had — no package, nothing to sign, and no standing appointment once you are back to it.

Sports and overuse injury questions, answered straight

Can a chiropractor help with a sports or overuse injury?

Often, yes, when the problem is mechanical: a joint that has stopped moving well, and the muscles and tendons around it that have been overloaded as a result. That describes most injuries that came on gradually. At the Woodinville clinic, treatment combines chiropractic adjustment, soft-tissue work and specific loading exercises. A fresh injury with heavy swelling, a joint out of place or a leg you cannot stand on needs urgent care first.

Do I have to stop training while I am being treated?

Usually not. In most cases the answer is a change to training rather than a full stop, for example fewer hills for a while or a lighter load overhead. If it does need to be a stop, Dr. Penner tells you why and roughly for how long.

How many visits does a sports injury take?

Most people are done in a handful of visits, though it depends on the injury and how long it has been building. Dr. Penner tells you how many visits he expects after the exam, not before it. Care ends when you are back to your sport without it flaring afterward, and there is no package to buy up front.
